Hello Friends,
Evan Greer here from Andover, MA. I've been a medic / organizer in the
Boston community for a while, but have been away in New Orleans, for those of you who don't know me. You may or may not be hearing about it on the news, but
there is currently major flooding going on in many towns to the north of Boston in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
There are dams that may burst overnight, sewage plants have been flooded, and hundreds of millions of gallons of toxic sewage are flowing into the Merrimack River Watershed; residential areas are losing power and drinkable water.
THIS IS A CALL FOR HELP AND SOLIDARITY
If you want to help, please call me ASAP: 978-852-6457,
or write: evan@riotfolk.org
I just got back from working with the Common Ground Collective in New
Orleans, doing grassroots relief work in the aftermath of Hurricane
Katrina. Having seen the damage that flooding can do, and the racist and
classist response that officials took there, I feel strongly that it is our
responsibility as activists and allies in Boston to take action NOW and get
involved in the emergency-response, rebuilding, and relief efforts.
I have a pick-up truck, a canoe, and a safe place to stay in Andover (my parents
are offering to open their home to activists and volunteers.) I am looking
for ANYONE who wants to come and help out as soon as this evening (Monday)
and over the next several days / weeks. Whether or not you have Medical or
Emergency Response skills, there will be plenty of clean-up, distribution,
coordination and general aid work to do.
I am contacting various community groups in the hardest hit areas: Lawrence, Lowell, Haverhill, Peabody, etc., and attempting to determine where they most need help and exactly what they need. I will try to act as a link between those groups and the activist community in Boston, to help people who want to plug in with groups looking for volunteers. Please call me: 978-852-6457.
I don't want to be the only link, as well, so others who want to make this a more
collective relief endeavor are more than welcome to come and get involved in the coordination efforts.
I spent most of today driving around surveying the scene.
Most rivers and streams are over their banks, many roads are closed into and out of the hardest hit areas. Residential areas are under significant amounts of
water, and Hit hardest, of course, are communities of color, which in this area are generally built along polluted rivers, in low-lying areas where rain is collecting the most. Over the next several days, we can expect that wealthier white neighborhoods and corporate areas will receive the most attention and resources, so it is our responsibility as allies to go to and help in the areas that need it most.
Again, if you want to help, please get in touch: 978-852-6457,

Re: *CALL FOR FLOOD HELP*
Wed, July 5, 2006 - 12:02 PMThanks for posting this Z-dawg.
I'm back home in Eastern Canada and will be heading to Boston to do a presentation for Jeff Taylor, who loaned me the dome for Katrina Relief. Maybe I can go early and set the dome up there to offer shelter.
I'll give Evan a call now. Anyone else have accounts to share?
